TV Recap: 30 Rock-The Ones

Sparrow Lane

NY Magazine's Vulture newsletter just alerted me to these photograph's by a photographer named Holly Andres, which will be featured at the Robert Mann Gallery through December 6. Her series titled Sparrow Lane features exquisite 60's fashion with brightly saturated colors that Joan Holloway could easily fit into and story lines taken from youth mystery novels such as Nancy Drew. I love the faces on all of the girls in the photos. They look so honestly scared and confused, and I want to know what's in the secret drawers and behind the freaky picture frames they're slowly pulling open! They also kind of remind me of when my sister and I were little and we'd play murderer--or rather, I'd tell her there was a murderer in the house and she'd run screaming for her life and I'd stand there buckled over with evil laughter. I know, I know but it was SOOO so easy.

Here's a little info on the artist:
Holly Andres's first solo exhibition in New York will feature photographs from the series Sparrow Lane, including the debut of new works in the series. Displaying a rich understanding of color and composition, Andres's tableaux depict young women on the threshold of adulthood, propelled by their curiosity and sense of discovery. Sparrow Lane is a strange yet familiar world filled with floral wallpapers, satin dresses, vanity mirrors, and family photos in gilded frames — the trappings of adolescence in a bygone age.

Drawing equally upon Hitchcockian cinematic tropes and Nancy Drew dust jackets, Andres's stunning photographs plumb psychological depths that are as quixotic as they are visually seductive. Her protagonists seem caught in states of hyper-self-consciousness: suspicious of watching eyes out of frame, their stiff gestures betray their vulnerability. On the brink of discovery — at that awkward age when one is no longer a child, but not yet fully an adult — these heroines appear as much posed as poised. Their snooping is comprised of small transgressions borne of a strong dose of curiosity, incidents along the way to some personal revelation.

Dressing Like Mad Men

I recently have fallen in love with AMC's original series "Mad Men"--as the rest of the world has as well--and have FINALLY caught up on all of season one and what's been shown so far of season two via the magic of On Demand. The show is rocking my world so far--sex, scandal, illegitimate children, smoking and drinking in the office, victory, defeat, humility, drunken affairs, smarmy kiss asses, swanky parties, insane housewives, etc. Everything one hopes for in a new series to sink your DVR into for MONTHS and MONTHS at a time. But I think the thing that really keeps me coming back to the show is the beauty of it. Look at da pwetty collllllaaaasss!

"Mad Men" is one of the most visually stunning shows on television. Usually "Gossip Girl" fulfills this role of a source of fashion salivation for me but being that it's not on right now I've been yearning for anew and "Mad Men" has filled that role QUITE nicely. It also helps that the story line of "Mad Men" is a tad more grown up then "Gossip Girl's" consistently predictable "DAN I didn't LIE to you!" overdone, slutty tease of a good old fashioned trashy teen soap opera. (Don't hate me GG, I'll come back to you starting Sept.1 I promise!)

The clothes the women and men wear on "Mad Men" are so hip, so chic, so NOW yet so THEN, I just want every BIT of them! The brooches, the pearls, the platinum hair, the fiery red hair! The bright greens and golds, the hounds tooth, the riding boots, the tulle skirts, the long cigarettes, everything is so damn CLASSY that even at their most filthy, disgusting, horrible moments the characters retain their Grace Kelly and Cary Grant swagger and style without mussing a single hair. Lets take a look at a few of the best looks of the show:

























My favorite look has always been to dress like a grandmother--pearls, pins, jewels, sweaters, hats and scarves. I pray to my dearest, lordiest of lords that I'll be seeing the repercussions of the "Mad Men" influence in my closet come this fall. I should get a head start on my future ensembles and practice being classy by drinking gimlets and smoking Lucky Strikes through a long filter, the stumbling and emphysema will be well worth it when everyone says how much I resemble a young Grace Kelly or Tippi Hedren --in drag :(
