I Want MY MTV--Music??

I heard a rumor a little while ago that MTV was going to start playing music videos again--Imagine That!--but on MTV2 as opposed to MTV proper--that's sacred reality TV territory of course. This morning VSL alerted me that MTV Music.com will be playing any and all music videos they have ever aired on the station. Interesting I suppose, but doesn't You Tube pretty much take care of our music video needs these days anyway? Also, the fact that it's called MTvM seems a tad redundant wouldn't you say? Music TV Music? Come on MTV, just give in and give us some freaking music like you're supposed to and we won't have to forever criticize you.

One thing I do like about the site is they even have old VH1 pop up videos, as well as tons of MTV Unplugged clips and performances from awards shows and such. I'm not hating it completely, and it's good to see they're starting to take a step in the right direction, so in honor of this small achievement I'm embedding a bunch of my favorite childhood videos. Some of these may be shameful but whateva, you know you loved them then too.

Nirvana Unplugged: The Man Who Sold the World
This is my favorite MTV Unplugged special ever. The album is soo so good and I still love it. I'm never a huge acoustic only fan but there's something that I miss very much abut these specials.

Blondie: Rapture
Here's a little pop up video for dat ass. For some reason I always remember this pop up video because of the little nugget of information I learned about this being the first "rap" video to be played on MTV and at the time the ONLY rap video played on VH1. And OH how glorious the rapping is. I love Blondie to pieces but rapping was not their forte but still bold of them to go there. Also the fact that Fab 5 Freddy introduced Blondie to the rap scene and until he heard this song on the radio always thought it was a joke is hilarious. Can you blame him really?

Blind Melon: No Rain
Come on, WHO didn't like this video in the 90's? So adorable and catchy. It wasn't until later that I actually started listening to Blind Melon and really grew to respect them. This song was a great breakout but not at all a good representation of what were capable of.

Madonna
: Burning Up
I'm just playing this jam because it's one of my ABSOLUTE fave Madonna songs that is highly overlooked. And I think that if we're talking about MTV Madonna needs to be on here somewhere.

The B52's: Deadbeat Club
I don't think I've actually ever seen this video before but the B52's remind me of my childhood like no other. My parents had the Cosmic Thing album (err cassette tape) and my sister and I LOVEDDDDDDD it. We played that tape out like it was our job, rollerskating in the basement, blasting these jams and fighting over who got to be the blond or the red head. I was usually the blond, she was the red head because she loved Miss Ivan from Pee Wee and Peggy Bundy. This video makes me want to join the Deadbeat Club ASAP and put on all of their outfits--especially that leopard coat and black mini dress.

TLC
: Baby-Baby-Baby
Whenever people talk about TLC they COMPLETELY overlook their first album "Ooooh on the TLC Tip" and go straight for "Crazy Sexy Cool" and let me tell you, "Oooh on the TLC Tip" rocked my world in 4th grade as it still does. This album is awesome and covered such topics as safe sex, feminism and wearing hats 2 da back.

The Flaming Lips: She Don't Use Jelly
I remember seeing this video when I was just KNEE high to a grasshopper and thinking HOW CRAZY and NEW and EDGY it looked and WOW he has ORANGE HAIR! Watching it now makes me feel SOOO so old, but they still look awesome and I would probably fall in love with this song all over again if it came out now. Ever heard the Ben Folds Five cover of this song? It's very loungey yet perfectly exciting.

Ben Folds Five: One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces
Speaking of Ben Folds Five, this video/song/album changed my life in highschool. The day I discovered the glory of Ben Folds Five, ahh I remember it well... I was at one of the 45 Dave Matthews concerts I went to in highschool (yes, I know that's a secret a I should keep to myself but give me a break I was in 9th grade and at that time Dave Matthews was new and refreshing and there were not any douche bag a dozen who were into them too) and Ben Fold Five, along with Beck were the opening acts. Ben Folds Five went on and GOD damn were they awesome. Beck went on after them and he was surprisingly VERY disappointing in comparison. After that event I latched onto the BFF like we WERE BFFs and though I've had to put Ben Folds to rest for a bit my love for his sweet, nerdy, indie rocker face grows ever still.

Bjork
: All Is Full of Love
The first Bjork video I ever saw was for Human Behavior obviously, and it sacred the dickens out of me. It wasn't until this beautiful Chris Cunningham video that I truly fell in love with Bjork.

Warren G: Regulate
Warren G, Nate Dogg, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre all give me flashbacks to a time of baggy jean shorts, large t-shirts and Converse sneakers. Items a young female weighing 75lbs with size 8 feet should NEVER wear.

And last but not least (I could go one forever but I doubt anyone has read even as far as this so I'll just end it here) in honor of the show I'm going to see "tonight" ehh ehh get it?
The Smashing Pumpkins: Today
This is the first Smashing Pumpkins song I ever heard, but for some reason MTV doesn't seem to have the VIDEO--hmmm major oversight MTV--so here's a nice little retro clip of a show they played back in the dizay. Billy Corgan has hair, adorable!
