Scar Star

Scarlett Johansson can't really sing, but so what. Some of my favorite musicians can't really sing. I tend to prefer raw imperfection over smooth and boring any way. This is not to say that I completely enjoy her singing on the first single from her Tom Waits cover album either, but I do enjoy the music. It's TV on the Radio and David Bowie, HOW bad could it be, really.

If she was trying to go for forceful and monotone, she did it. If not, I pray for my ears. But a good effort nonetheless. As for her video, mehh. It's pretty because she's pretty. But it does come off a tad self absorbed to me. I've seen the whole "I'm a suffering starlett who's trying my damndest to handle my amazing looks and fame without selling my soul to the devil" before. I have no sympathy.

Does it speak to the song? Perhaps. But I think if she really wanted to be taken seriously as a musician she wouldn't frame her face and hone her fame in order to publicize the album. The music, interest and buzz alone can carry it. You don't see Zooey Deschanel glomming her face all over the place to get her album out there. But then again, her voice is actually really good. These faces=not everywhere.

See the video for "Falling Down" here.
