Muxtape

My dear pal A Dam Fine Man has recently begun spending his time pouring his heart and mind into providing his friends with bi-weekly Muxtapes for our listening pleasure. So in the spirit of giving, from now on I will be posting Adam's Muxtapes in hopes that all two people who read this blog may enjoy the gift of jamz as well. I will also post Adam's ever so thorough (yet lengthy) explanations for his weekly choices. WHO knows maybe you'll LEARN something dummies. JK!!!!!!!!!Enjoyzzzzzzzzz

This week's Muxtape can be found here

VIA Mr. Fineman "More like muxtape the Turd!! Hopefully not, right?! Hello all, here is the new muxtape, I am going to get right into it...

My love of Frank Zappa has been well documented for some time now, and I decided to put only one of his songs on my muxtapes. The song I chose has two of my favorite things in music going for it, firstly chanting! and secondly singing in the round (they go hand in hand; think row, row, row your boat from kindergarten music class). Zappa's voice is unique (read: terrible) so this song is sung mainly by "Flo and Eddie" who used to be in the Turtles, singers of the 60's classic Happy Together.

I always thought that Please Don't Go Girl was the greatest song ever made by NKOTB, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn via my homegirl Lisa that, in fact, Tonight is their best work. This shit sounds like a Beatles song, especially during the chorus and outro. The synth horn is embarrassing to listen to. "...taught ya 'bout Hanging Tough" is the fucking worst lyric in the history of lyrics.

Royksopp sing that catchy song "Remind Me" featured in those Geico cavemen commercials, where the one fucker is on the people-mover in the airport and he sees the caveman add. The song I have selected is good and so are their albums.

The 3rd verse in the Consequence song is awesome, he thematically moves through the words 'good', 'bad' and 'ugly' while shitting on the fantastic Kanye beat.

The Fire Theft are Sunny Day Real Estate without the lead guitarist, Dan Hoerner, who was too cool for school to be with the group. The ending of this song makes me poo my pants in delight.

And finally, the Big Star song Thirteen is lyrically the best interpretation of what it is like to be an awkward middle schooler, trying to get tickets to a dance, dealing with asshole parents who just dont understand the power of rock. It is like the audio equivalent of Freaks and Geeks (think Sam Weir). Compare this to the Replacements song Sixteen Blue which is like the next step in teenage gawkiness, but instead of dances and hand holding, the song is all about sexual identity issues, wondering if you are gay, lying to your dad that you have a date, etc. Also the guitar outro in 16 blue gets me everytime, such perfect use of feedback.

Enjoy!

-Adam"

Thirteen is great. Elliott Smith and Wilco both do amazing covers of it. I also love I'm In Love With A Girl for Big Star heartbreak, and September Gurls for something a little more upbeat. And Sixteen Blue rules.
