Muxtape

Time for another edition of A Dam Fine Man's Muxtape. Here's what he's got to say this week and find the tape HERE:

-The Seattle-based Blue Scholars feature a Filipino-American MC and an Iranian-American DJ, so that's novel. Also this song's beat is fucking sweet.

-Chromeo are awesome, check out the video to this song, it is a parody of the MTV staple "Money For Nothing" from Dire Straits.

-DJ Oh No is Madlib's brother, in case you were keeping a rap family pedigree chart at home like I do.

-I first heard "Back in NYC" off Jeff Buckley's posthumous album Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. When I learned it was actually a Peter Gabriel-era Genesis song, I went on a Genesis piracy binge, but this remains my favorite of their songs. The song really gets going when the piano line drops at the start of the second verse and makes this version the better of the two.

-Too bad the new Helio Sequence album doesn't come close to touching the majesty of Let it Fall Apart.

-Fun Fact! Little Brother is the first artist to be featured on multiple muxtapes of mine, with an earlier appearance on the debut mix. The part of the song when rapper Phonte tries to justify men cheating on their wives by saying, "a woman's life is love, a man's love is life" and basically to be grateful if your man doesn't beat you or your kids in addition to the fucking around, has to be the most absurdly offensive shit ever. Lil Wayne's verse is hot.

-Tegan and Sara, everyone's favorite Canadian-lesbian-monozygotic twin pop singers, used to be a guilty pleasure for myself, but no more!! They are good god damn it, and this song is a testament to that.

-Time for my fledgling female following to be alienated by the Soft Boys. Johnny P this song is for you, no surprise considering your musical taste is a clinically proven female repellent.

-And finally, this Violent Femmes song is what folks like to refer to as "achingly beautiful". The sentiment is just perfect. The little acoustic guitar solo reminds me of the solo in the Smashing Pumpkins version of "Landslide", and the outro 'la la la' section makes me misty eyed just typing about it.

Holler!

-Adam
